January 16, 1928

Much has been written in this series about one of St. Bonaventure University’s most prestigious alumni – Mark Hellinger. But, many people may not know where and how his career took off.

Hellinger first joined the New York Daily News in 1923, working as a city reporter. Only two years later, he left the city beat and starting writing a Sunday column that became very popular among New Yorkers.

It was on this day that he started writing his daily column in The News. It was this column that would make him and instant celebrity, starting a career that took him from a syndicated Sunday page all the way to Hollywood as a movie producer.
