This Day in Bonaventure History

March 6, 2012

Mark Schmidt coached under the late Skip Prosser when both were at Loyola (Md.) and Xavier. Schmidt credits Prosser with teaching him how to forge relationships and be a decent man. Prosser even told Schmidt to take the coaching job at St. Bonaventure University shortly before his own death in 2007.

Schmidt considered Prosser such a good friend of his that he would pick up the phone and call him whenever he needed advice; either when he was the head man at Robert Morris or starting off at Bonaventure. That’s why Prosser’s tragic death was so hard for Schmidt to take.

But one of the many things Schmidt learned from Prosser was how to build a program from the ground up. This he mastered. In just his fifth season on the job, Schmidt lead the Bonnies to an Atlantic 10 Championship and a secondround matchup in the NCAA Tournament. But even before those accomplishments the national media started giving Schmidt the attention he deserved.

It was on this day that the Sporting News chose Schmidt as the A-10 Conference Coach of the Year. In addition, his star recruit, senior Andrew Nicholson, was named A-10 Player of the Year.
