ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. (Nov. 19) – March of Dimes Olean was declared a success tonight at St. Bonaventure University’s Student Government Association meeting.
Audra Distefano, March of Dimes community director, announced that close to $52,000 will be raised by the end of December. Bonaventure and its students contributed about $10,300 to the fundraising efforts, she said.
The event is already planned for next year. It will return on Oct. 4, 2014.
Sophomore class officers then announced a new campaign, ”Sideline Cancer.” The goal is to raise money for the Griffith Family Foundation. The Griffith family has dedicated the past few years to raising money for pancreatic cancer research after a family member died from the disease in 2010.
Roughly $250,000 has been raised by the foundation so far. The officers said shirts with the “I Can Sideline Cancer” slogan will go on sale shortly, with the proceeds benefitting the foundation.
Afterward, SGA officers presented on the recent Medaille College Leadership Conference in Buffalo, N.Y.
Some ideas the officers came back with after meeting with other SGA members:
*A university event calendar on Moodle would make it easier to inform students of what’s going on
*When professors leave their positions, they should leave a folder or a USB drive
*A yearly retreat for SGA members to become better acquainted
*Make further reforms to community service requirements
*Form a council of club presidents that meets once a month
*Start a monthly email that shows clubs what volunteer opportunities are available
The ideas will be discussed at later SGA meetings.
Lastly, Management Club, American Marketing Association, Bonaventure Accounting Association, Financing Club, Business Information Systems, American Advertising Federation, The Laurel, Kappa Delta Pi, Physical Activities Club and Model UN gave updates on their respective activities this semester.
*The Laurel and Slam Poetry will co-host a poetry slam on Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Rathskeller
*Members of Physical Activities Club will leave in the morning for a New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance conference
*The junior class will host the Annual Gift Tree with proceeds going to needy Olean families. The amount of families that signed up this year is triple the usual number, so more donations are needed. A table will be set up in the Reilly Center.
*The ugly sweater party will be on Dec. 6 in the Rathskeller. Tickets go on sale Monday with proceeds going to Toys for Tots.
