As many St. Bonaventure University students know, 2010 alumna Liz D’Onofrio was invited to appear on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” after she made a humorous Facebook post and shared it to the show’s Facebook page.
After getting the shocking call from Ellen, and accepting the invitation to appear on the show, D’Onofrio packed her bags and headed to L.A. However, she said she was met with some disappointing news.
“Ellen got the flu and was unable to host. So, [Ellie Kemper] hosted, and it was a different kind of show,” D’Onofrio said.
Ellie Kemper, who has appeared in 21 Jump Street, The Office and Bridesmaids added her own segments to the show that Ellen doesn’t do, D’Onofrio said.
“[She was] a lot of fun, [had a] good sense of humor, and even though she was nervous, she won the audience over pretty quickly,” D’Onofrio said. “ She did [segments] that Ellen doesn’t do like ‘Ellie’s current events,’ which was just a comically short list of obvious things that were happening like ‘Bieber got arrested’ and ‘It’s cold in New York and warm in LA.’ She also did a funny thing where she replaced the name Ellen with the name Ellie on the stage and on some of the gift shop souvenirs. It was funny and very cute.”
While D’Onofrio said she had a good time, she added that she wished she could have met Ellen.
“It was a fun, quick trip but it was disappointing not to meet her,” D’Onofrio said.
But the trip wasn’t a complete flop for D’Onofrio and her friend.
“The audience [won] tickets for next year’s Christmas show, so I’ll be heading back for that!”
When not on the set, D’Onofrio spent her time relaxing with her friend.
“We were only in LA for a day or so, and my friend’s flight got delayed so she couldn’t get to me until the evening before the show, so we just ate in the hotel a few times and got manicures,” D’Onofrio said. “We didn’t have a car, and it wasn’t a familiar city, so we didn’t venture too far from the hotel. We were also pretty jetlagged so we just took it easy.”
D’Onofrio said she had a wonderful time and is excited to return in December.
“It was a great experience and a fun show,” D’Onofrio said. “It was so much fun to see the set and dance a lot and see Ellie Kemper and Neil Patrick Harris. I’m disappointed that I didn’t meet Ellen, but I like to believe that I’ll still get the chance at some point. And I can’t wait for the Christmas show! The producers are paying for that trip too. They are so generous and kind.”
