The St. Bonaventure Bonnies men’s basketball team thoroughly dominated the Mansfield Mountaineers 86-45 in an exhibition game Saturday afternoon.
Bonaventure’s superior shooting performance was a major factor in the rout. They shot 47.9 percent from the field as opposed to Mansfield’s 27.7 percent mark.
The Bonaventure defense stifled the Mountaineers with a full-court press, forcing 28 turnovers.
“We won and met our goals, holding them under 50 points and under 40 percent from the field,” said Bonaventure coach Mark Schmidt.
Dion Wright led all scorers with 20 points on 10-for-12 shooting. Marcus Posley added 14 points and Denzel Gregg chipped in 11.
“No one was selfish out there,” said Wright. “Everyone was swinging the ball and getting open shots.”
“The main thing was to come out, execute and play as hard as I could,” said Posley. “I feel like I can shoot the ball a lot better.”
Freshman Jaylen Adams got the start at point guard and performed well, scoring five points and dishing out five assists. With senior guard Jordan Gathers still dealing with a hip injury, Adams and junior Iakeem Alston will split time at the point.
The Bonnies play their first official game next Saturday against Dartmouth. The contrast of styles will be something to watch for; the up-tempo Bonaventure offense will face the slow, Ivy League Big Green offensive attack.
