The St. Bonaventure women’s soccer team fell short of a win Sunday in double overtime, dropping a 2-1 decision to Atlantic 10 opponent George Washington.
Both teams had multiple opportunities throughout both halves and the game was scoreless until late in the second half, when Bonaventure’s Danielle Vis received a pass from Abby Maiello to score in the 75th minute.
Shortly after the first goal of the game was scored, George Washington’s Sofia Pavon scored in the 81st minute to tie the game. Just when it seemed like the game was bound for overtime, the Bonnies fouled the Colonial’s Emily Brown in the box, which led to a penalty kick.
“At that point, all you can think is that the game is over,” said Bonnies coach Brdarski. As Brown fired the shot, however, goalie Beth Moore was there with the miraculous save to send the game to overtime.
There wasn’t much action in the first overtime, but it wasn’t long into the second overtime before George Washington’s Nicole Belfonti put the ball in the net off a corner kick to win the game.
Although Bonaventure ultimately took the loss, Brdarski thought his team gave it their all, especially sophomore goalie Beth Moore. “She played really well, had total command of the box and made herself so much bigger than she is. She really showed a lot of guts.
“I think we played heads and tails above how we played Thursday (a 5-0 loss to George Mason),” said Brdarski. “We may have lost the game, but we won the fight.”
The Bonnies’ next game will be on the road against Duquesne this Thursday, where they will be looking for their first conference win.
