Keely Fresh has a lot of work to do to match her amazing high school career, but the guard from Lexington, Va. is up for the challenge.
Fresh comes to the St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team after clearing the record books at Rockbridge High School. She holds school records for career points (1,451), career three-pointers (161) and career free throws (418).
Fresh has already become acclimated to her teammates after spending the summer learning and practicing with them.
“My teammates are awesome,” Fresh said. “They are all really supportive and when we have team time together we talk about everything from basketball to school and things in between, which makes me feel really comfortable here.”
Fresh, a 2015 McDonald’s All-American nominee, is looking to help Bonaventure improve its shooting percentage and shots from beyond the three-point line.
“I know that my job is to shoot,” said the 5-foot-8 guard. “I’m supposed to come here and shoot the ball, and I’m confident I can do that.”
Head coach Jim Crowley has also liked what he’s seen thus far from Fresh.
“Keely can shoot it,” Crowley said. “We have to continue to work on her athleticism, but she knows how to find her shot. And she isn’t afraid of the big shot, and that is always an asset that we want.”
While some freshman may be intimidated early by the bright lights of Division I basketball, Fresh said that her experiences in high school games should really help her transition.
“I’ve been playing a long time and have been in a lot of pressure situations,” she said. “I know that the biggest thing is to keep calm and keep your head cool.”
