The St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team continued its winning streak with a 70-60 win over Penn State on Saturday afternoon. The Bonnies are now a perfect 7-0 at home this season.
Katie Healy, the Bonnies’ leading scorer, returned to the starting lineup after suffering an injury in practice a week ago. She stuffed the stat sheets and netted 19 points to go along with five rebounds, seven assists and three blocks.
“(Katie) was doing a really good job of attacking and putting pressure on them,” said coach Jim Crowley. “She was making some great decisions.”
Sophomore Miranda Drummond led the way for the brown and white with 21 points and six rebounds. She sank three three-pointers and went 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Senior Nyla Rueter went 2-for-5 from behind the arc and registered 10 points.
The Bonnies held the Lions to 33.3 percent shooting (20-of-60) from the field. Redshirt senior guard Brianna Banks led her team with a game-high 26 points in 34 minutes of action. Sophomore guard Lindsey Spann contributed with 17 points and three steals.
Bonaventure led for over 38 minutes of play and took a 19-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. However, the Lions would rally and bring the score within two at 56-54. Solid free throw shooting from Drummond and Emily Michael allowed the Bonnies some breathing room and the Lions never took the lead.
The Bonnies won the rebounding battle, 41-36, over a much taller Penn State squad and dished out 15 assists compared to the Lion’s four.
“It was a case where I think our experience and our trust in one another really came out when we needed it,” said Crowley.
